copy of Suzhou

copy of Suzhou
At the Summer Palace, one emperor decided to have a copy built of Suzhou’s canals attached with little shops - already back then they were masters in copying things…

In December 1998, UNESCO included the Summer Palace on its World Heritage List. It declared the Summer Palace “a masterpiece of Chinese landscape garden design. The natural landscape of hills and open water is combined with artificial features such as pavilions, halls, palaces, temples and bridges to form a harmonious ensemble of outstanding aesthetic value.”

5 reasons why falling in love with Thailand is easy

reason no. 1 [the people!]

reason no. 1 [the people!]
the people: it took me a while to balance the reasons for finding out the number one. but at the end it all comes down to the people and how they made me feel welcomed and at home in Thailand.

reason no. 2 [nature!]

reason no. 2 [nature!]
nature: whether it is jungle, mountains or beaches, Thailand’s nature is stunning!

reason no. 3 [culture and religion!]

reason no. 3 [culture and religion!]
culture and religion: I am not a Buddhist but I appreciate what this religion does to the people in Thailand! most Thais are friendly, open and warmhearted and I believe this comes through Buddhism. and on the other hand I like the temples, the monks and the rituals very much. this is so interesting to explore and experience!

In Chanthaburi, where this photo was taken, we were very welcomed by a member of the temple who showed us around and took the time to explain everything to us - a very special experience.

reason no. 4 [good food!]

reason no. 4 [good food!]
good food: Thai food is so delicious, always freshly made, very healthy and cheap! Thail people love to eat, that’s why you can find small cook shops everywhere in the streets.

reason no. 5 [the climate!]

reason no. 5 [the climate!]
the climate: the warm rain keeps the country green and clean :-)

Event Photography

For event photography I like to use my 14-24mm f/2.8 lens a lot. It makes the venue look like a huge place and also produces quite an amount of lens flare. Normally one would want to avoid lens flare but with disco light shining directly into the lens it adds a nice touch of glamour to the photo - as you can see on this one here.

Nochmals vielen, vielen Dank!

Liebe Grüße,
Johanna & Periklis

an evening out in Acapulco

23. May 2010
Acapulco

Originally Acapulco wasn’t on our travel list, but since we got stuck in Mexico, due to the Icelandic volcano incident, we made the best out of this unexpected situation and took a trip to Acapulco at the west coast.

The beauty and diversity of this city has been a big big surprise to us and somehow made our Mexico experience complete! It is a fascinating city and you shouldn’t miss it! Of course don’t expect it to be a beach paradise, though the water is nice there. Acapulco has an interesting mixture of modern and rotten buildings, of posh hotels and the normal Mexican way of life… We loved it!

Maya power

Maya power

Photo on the left: The Maya city of Chichen Itza is one of the best restored sites in Mexico - history really comes alive here! Especially near the main Pyramid you can imagine the power and wealth the Mayas once had.

Photo on the right: Another Mayan city we went to was Coba. For us the 3rd archaeological site we visited in Mexico and a highlight too, because visitors are still allowed to climb steep and over 40 meters high pyramid. It is the tallest pyramid on the Yucatan peninsula. From the top you can see scrubland, scrubland and scrubland…
